Biography: From Daydreaming to Reality

James “Bo” Brennan was born in Beaumont, Texas, on September 11, 1986. He grew up in Sour Lake, Texas, a rural part of the country that gave him plenty of opportunities to explore the woods and swamps around his home and dream up exciting adventures full of knights, wizards, and monsters. He started playing Dungeons and Dragons when he was 11 years old, and it opened up an amazing world where he could adventure and travel and see the world beyond ‘his little village’.
He went beyond his little village when he was eighteen and moved to the University of Texas at Dallas where he studied International Relations. He enjoyed the bigger city life until he graduated in 2009 and made the most consequential decision of his life—moving to Shanghai, China, to teach English. It was supposed to be a one-year gig, but opportunities kept arising in the VERY big city, and he learned Mandarin Chinese and worked as a teacher, a journalist, an editor, a translator, a researcher, and, eventually, a commercial real estate peddler.
After getting plenty of experience writing, editing, and translating, Bo started writing novels on the Shanghai subway on his way to work. He would (and still does) write his first drafts on the Notes app on his phone and then transfer the chapters over to his computer for all his editing work. He makes sure to write every day and has done so since October 10, 2019.
Finally, after twelve years of living an adventure like none other, Bo moved back to Houston, Texas with his wife Vicky and their daughter Olive. He still works for the commercial real estate firm Savills and still writes every day, enjoying the peace of mind that the two dramatically different sides of his professional life bring.
